NIKE TZ: CITY ZOOM TIEMPO SERIES, LIVESTRONG AF1 & TIEMPO.

This month’s Nike TZ release sees the drop of two shoes with a great cause – again supporting the Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG foundation and its fight against cancer.



The City Zoom Tiempo series is the fruit of the CTRS collective, a group of eight individuals – messengers, artists, mechanics, writers, photographers, creatives, from across the globe bound by their common love of the bicycle. The eight members represent various cities around the world - LA, Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris, London, and include famed Tour de France rider and LIVESTRONG foundation founder Lance Armstrong. During the final days of the 2009 Tour De France, seven of the riders took off from London and cycled to Paris on fixed gear bicycles in an epic journey that saw some of the riders test their limits and clock over 100miles on their final days heading into Paris, to see Lance cross the finish line at the Champs Elysee.



Initially an indoor soccer shoe, the Tiempo was originally adopted by some members of the NY and SF fixed gear fraternity as the Nike shoe of choice for riding, due to is narrow shape and low profile, giving it a good fit inside toe clips and the cushioning of the Zoom air unit. Taking the original Tiempo silhouette, each member of the CTRS was then given the opportunity to design a model using the materials of their choice, their own colour scheme to represent their respective cities, along with improving the overall shoe for its main purpose - riding.

The result - all the City Zoom Tiempos feature a full length Zoom Air midsole (!!), a denser/stiffer rubber outsole, and an overall stiffer construction in an effort to efficiently transfer energy in your pedal downstroke. Harder wearing leather and a stiffer sockliner were also incorporated to increase foot support during riding. The Tiempo’s lace flap/guard was kept as well, in an attempt to keep the rider’s laces from catching in the chain during riding.

With a history in BMX and all types of bicycles in general, Jupiter Desphy is an iconic LA creative figurehead, heading up the design at Los Angeles’ iconic Undefeated. Also a photographer, journalist, and DJ, his first experience with a bike led him into BMXes, then onto skateboarding, bringing him to Los Angeles from his native Las Vegas in ’93.

Perhaps the most technical of all the Zoom Tiempos, the UNDFTD model features a high abrasion resistant material toe cap, and unlike the other colourways, a 3M Nike swoosh and lace protector to increase visibility during night riding. A yellow heel patch was added to increase visibility, suede was chosen for the rest of the upper construction due to its flexibility and durablility, and as a reference to UNDFTD founder Eddie Cruz’s AF1 design (below), he placed an alternate colour swoosh on the inside of the shoe. Yellow and purple – the colours of the infamous LA Lakers.






TOKYO
Designed by: Takaharu “Hal” Okada, Legendary Tokyo Bike Messenger

With seven years’ worth of experience, “Hal” has become somewhat of a legend amongst the messenger community on the streets of one of the busiest cities in the world – Tokyo, Japan. Known to be one of few messengers there who delivers his packages exclusively on brakeless, fixed gear bikes in Tokyo, he is the head of the “Transmit” messenger company, which also organizes regular alley cats and race events in Tokyo and other parts of Japan.

Featuring an all-round nubuck construction, Hal’s inspiration for the colour is simple – the “rising sun” of the Japanese national flag, with the incorporation of the LIVESTRONG yellow to symbolize his support of Lance’s foundation. A 3M Nike swoosh completes the package, for night time visibility.

Perhaps one of the most well known faces in the growing global fixed gear community, Ted “SuperTed” James comes from a family history of cycling. Entering his first charity race (30miles) at nine years old on a five gear mountain bike, he has never stopped, becoming a bike mechanic at 16 years old after breaking numerous parts – a feat he continues to perform to this very day. After dabbling in skateboarding and BMX, he reapproriated his tricks onto his fixed gear bike, giving way to his reputation as one of the most hardcore riders in the fixed gear freestyle/trick scene, always going big and breaking new ground.

His interpretation of the City Zoom Tiempo is a suede toebox for comfort, tough leather construction in the sides and heel, with a “lucky green” coloured Nike Swoosh, looking more like a traditional football boot.

Also with a history in BMX and skateboarding, Kyle moved to San Francisco in 1998, where he lived in the infamous 775 Geary skateboarding “half-way house” in The Tenderloin district. After working for legendary skateboarder and icon Keith Hufnagel, Kyle was intrguied one day by seeing messengers hanging out in Union Square with ‘fixed gear’ bicycles. Fellow CTR member Massan (Mash SF) then showed him the ropes, and since then he has never stopped, and is now the brand manager at New York’s DAVE’S QUALITY MEATS, commuting everyday on his bike from the East Village .

The grey, tough, leather colourway of the shoe represents New York’s sometimes grey landscape of buildings, cloudy skies, and grey tarmac. A NY messenger tradition is also to strip all the paint on their bikes, in an effort to deter thieves, choosing to leave their frames raw grey alloy or steel. It is this philosophy that describes Kyle’s design – unassuming, classic, a shoe you can wear 24/7, on or off the bike, without attracting too much attention. Like a stripped down bike.

Completing the Air Zoom Tiempo collection is a shoe designed than none other than 7-times Tour De France winner and LIVESTRONG foundation founder Lance Armstrong.

Wanting to represent his home town of Austin, Texas, Lance involved his ‘LBS’, and one of the most iconic cycling stores in the world – Mellow Johnny’s, and features the signature yellow highlights of the LIVESTRONG foundation.

Highlights of this particular model include the premium oiled leather parred with the aggressive anti-abrasive materials, representing the ‘two sides’ of Lance – refined, but also competitive. Contrasting yellow and black insoles also feature LIVESTRONG and Mellow Johnny’s logos, as well as the custom embossing on the lace protector.

STARKS laces also came to the project, and supplied two special custom laces (black, and LIVESTRONG yellow) for Lance’s Zoom Tiempo – with LIVESTRONG printed on the laces close to the lace ends.

Initially only available at Mellow Johnny’s and Nike Sportswear 21 Mercer NYC, this special model has been made available to us in another rare opportunity from Nike.

A staunch supporter of the LIVESTRONG foundation, street culture icon and west coast influencer Eddie Cruz and UNDFTD have been behind numerous projects to help raise awareness and donations for the LIVESTRONG foundation all throughout this year.

Much like the ‘artist series’ collection that were auctioned for charity in July, this Air Force 1 follows a similar design of previous UNDFTD x NIKE Air Force 1 releases, featuring their famous “shemagh” pattern throughout the front half of the shoe, crossing over into the signature LIVESTRONG yellow towards the heel. Alternate black/yellow swooshes on the outside and inside of the shoe completes the LIVESTRONG colour scheme, along with the LIVESTRONG tag on the tongue of the shoe. An AF1 Supreme, this model also features a complete leather sock lining, as well as a leather covered midsole, bearing a new version of their infamous laser etched motto on their previous shoes – “ON YOUR BIKE KID.”

A true reappropriation of one of the best AF1 releases ever, and for a great cause.
