... Well half deaf anyway.

It’s been 36 hours since I lost 90% of hearing in my right ear. Everything is muffled and I am constantly finding myself turning my head to the right to gain greater clarity. Asking people to speak up and repeat themselves has been a frustrating string of experiences for others, and myself, to say the least.

This temporary loss of hearing has been a humbling experience. You really gain an insight in to how it feels to lose something that you take for granted on a daily basis. To be born without hearing or with hearing impairments is a steep learning curve, but to grow up having something and then losing it is a steeper one still. You learn quickly to adapt and find ways to get around common situations. Maybe I should have picked up sign language. It is the third official language of New Zealand

I’ve taken this experience as my very own “Deaf Awareness Week”, choosing to make the most of my experience. To be honest, I was hoping that my loss of hearing would allow my other senses to heighten...let’s say to the level of this guy...

Yea...You all know the guy =D But alas, nothing has changed =s

So as Easter holidays approach, and a flight to Christchurch beckons on the horizon tomorrow at 9am, I hope my hearing returns. If not, the steep learning curve continues. Funny how much you learn when you lose something huh?
