He never looked right, out of a Sixers jersey. But now hes back.
Surely you guys could not have seen Iverson "retiring", could you? Well, staying retired that is. Listed at 6 ft Iverson stands closer to 5'11 and reigns as the greatest player to grace the hardwood under 6 ft. Iverson’s credentials of 10 All Star berths, 1997 ROY, 2001 MVP award, four time scoring champ, and three time All NBA First Team only begin to highlight his fierce competitiveness, drive and swagger that can not be compared. Possibly the greatest pound-for-pound player, Iverson has been described as a cultural icon of the modern era of the L, ushering the age of tattoos, corn rows, the du-rag and oversized everything. One can not help to think how playing basketball down at the local court has change due to Iverson’s presence(no killer crossovers? Who would watch?). However, while one cannot deny what Iverson has done for the Game; even attributing the Answer with revolutionizing the Game, equally, one cannot discount what Iverson has done to the “local game”. I’m not talking about the game at lower levels, but rather the game at the local local level. Think the local park, down the road. Or the YMCA on a Saturday morning. But what has Iverson done to the local game exactly? Well…
In all seriousness, without undue bias, how can anyone say that the one kid running isolation and throwing down 12 crossovers, 3 rocker steps, 8 jab-jabs, 3 jab steps, 2 spin moves and all to be finished off with a weak ass triple-clutch-pump-fake-fading-to-the-right-with-no-regard-or-thought-for-a-kick-out-pass...air ball has not been influenced by that Iverson does to opponents attempting to D up on him night in and night out? You all know that kid. The kid that does not pass. The kid that thinks he can carry the team...in a game where only bragging rights are up for grabs. Or not even that.
The first piece of this blog may seem that Iverson is my hero. Well, he’s not. That accolade goes to Shawn Marion. And now Rashard Lewis. But that does not mean that I discount the Answer to merely a closed questioned answer. While Iverson will be inducted in to the Hall of Fame one day, I just have not been a fan of volume shooters. Yes he may go off for 50, but what good is all the individual accolades, if one can not win and get the all important double-u? Iverson has even said it himself, all the individual accolades don’t mean “shit”, if you can get a ‘Ship.
Lets hope Iverson 2.0 with the "rebulit" 76ers 2.0 along with and improved and matured Iggy 2.0 can bring Iverson what he needs. And the L their undisputed pound for pound champ. The Answer has returned.
